Knowledge and attitudes of students and trainees in health care related fields regarding post-mortem organ donation and brain death
In recent years, post-mortem organ donation in Germany has been the focus of mostly negative media attention due to several transplantation scandals starting in 2012. German post-mortem organ donation rates are the lowest among Eurotransplant nations in 2018 (data of Eurotransplant). Therefore, knowledge and attitudes towards post-mortem organ donation and brain death among students and trainees in health care related fields need to be considered in order to identify misconceptions and positively influence training of future health care professionals.
Aim
Thus, this study aims to examine (among future health care professionals):
- the influence of sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, religion) on attitudes towards organ donation and brain death,
- knowledge of post-mortem organ donation and brain death (criteria) in Germany,
- satisfaction with training regarding post-mortem organ donation and brain death,
- the influence of trust in the German health care system and the influence of irregularities in the transplantation process on organ donation acceptance.
